For Fun in the Sun Check Out OKC's Lake Hefner

Lake Hefner is a reservoir to the northwest of Oklahoma City. It was built back in 1947 as an expansion to the water supply in the city. It is named after a mayor – Robert A. Hefner – who served for eight years, from 1939 to 1947.

The lake has an average depth of 29ft, and is about 2500 acres in size. Nowadays, it is mostly used for recreational activities.

Activities available in and around the lake:

Bird watching

For bird watchers, this is their little piece of heaven. It is one of the best positions in central Oklahoma to watch birds. An endless number different species of birds stop on the shoreline as they migrate.

Boating

The Oklahoma City boat club is based at Hefner. From April to October, weekends are filled with sail boat races. This is actually the best place to sailboat in the Oklahoma City area. The lake features dry storage for boats as well as docks

Recreation

There is a trail that traces the whole lake and it is not that long – just a little bit over nine miles. This has led to the increased popularity of jogging, walking, or biking around the lake.

Fishing

Although almost everything else is free of charge, you cannot fish off the banks of the lake or on the covered piers. Not unless you have a city permit to do so.

Play and picnic

There are a ton of playgrounds and picnics all around the lake. If you choose to engage in this activity, you can watch the colorful sailboats from a distance or choose to fly kites in the wide area.

Play golf

The golf course is located just off northwest expressway, southwest of the lake. There are two courses that the lake Hefner golf course has; the north and the south. The north is slightly bigger, 7000 yards in total and the south is 6300 yards.

Restaurants

Whether you want an incredible view of the lake while you eat or you are just on the look for state of the art patio dining, the restaurants at Lake Hefner have got you covered.

1.Mama Roja Mexican Kitchen

Even though this restaurant is a little bit pricier than its counterparts, you definitely get your money’s worth. You will have amazing views as you eat or if the weather gets too bad, there is also an enclosed space. The food here is spectacular.

2. Louie’s grill and bar

It is a local chain for restaurant/pub that serves very tasty pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, and wings. It has a beautiful and lovely atmosphere. While it is set a little bit further than the rest of the restaurants, it still has an amazing view of the lake and the lighthouse.

3.Redrock Canyon Grill

The focus of this restaurant is southwest American cuisine, with the wood fire roasted rotisserie chicken standing out the most. It is both casual and a little bit more upscale than the aforementioned.

The menu also has dishes such as steak, pork chops, salmon, barbecue ribs and meatloaf. This is the perfect place to relax with a wonderful view of the lake.
